I purchased the 275, relatively the same product as the 285, in December 08. Roughly 3 weeks after the 1 year limited warranty was up, the sub blew out. I called Sony but they wouldn’t stand behind their product. They’re asking price for the sub? 160 dollars. More than half the cost of the whole system. Needless to say I won’t be purchasing a Sony again and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone else

Product came on time but was not satisfied with packaging it left some scratches on 2-3 speakers. Overall good product nice sound quality easy to setup. Suprised by that Remote is not having disk eject feature and its not working for my TV. No sound equalizer you can not adjust the sound as per your liking. All speakers not give output when you connect to TV (for DVD they give). Overall just satisfied as its SONY but expecting some good features from SONY Home theater whihc are not there.

I got this unit as a retirement gift and was hoping to replace my RCA surround sound system with it. BUYERS BEWARE: You CANNOT hook your satellite system to it. There are NO inputs on this unit — only outputs. In a nutshell, it’s a basic system that will let you enjoy your DVDs, CDs and your iPOD in “surround” sound. If you want to hear your football & basketball and video games through a home theatre system — don’t buy this unit.

Easy to install and set up the hardware. Very complicated manual to set up initial conditions. The manual was written by someone who knows how the unit works, but can’t conceive that his audience does not. Do I want to select ABCD video option or XYZ? How should I know? I don’t know what some of the options mean and they don’t say. It doesn’t matter, because the voice sound quality is bad. We bought it because the speakers in our LCD tv were small and pointed the wrong way. It was hard to hear/understand voice clearly on tv. These speakers didn’t help. There is so much base that just makes noise and not enough from the center speaker which should provide clear voice. It doesn’t. Can you turn the base down? Yes, but even low base is too much. There is no treble or tone adjustment.
Music sounds good, although I couldn’t get the ipod to play thru the unit.
I had also thought that someday I might upgrade to the wireless rear speakers. It took a lot of work just to figure out exactly what 2 pieces of equipment that I would have to buy. Then when you look at the low performance of the rear speakers, and their insignificance, why would you want to spend $200 to make them wireless?
So overall I am disappointed, but pleased with Amazon which took the unit back.
